When I was growing up, my mom would hand me, my morning cup of coffee and say, “sit down and drink it”. I always thought, she did not want me to spill it and hence asking me to sit down while drinking.
Today I am a working mother of 2 energetic
children. My mornings are hectic and crazy. Recently when my mom visited me, as
I was about to start my early morning chores in kitchen, she handed me my cup
and said, “Sit down and have your coffee”. I was curious and asked her, the
reason behind having to ‘sit down’ as spilling the coffee is no longer a valid
reason. She smiled and said, enjoying morning coffee is her favorite time of
day. She would sit down and enjoy the coffee, just enjoying the taste and
warmth the cup gives. Also she said that this clears her head to plan the day’s
cooking and other chores.
It was then I realized, I am used to
sipping coffee from my favorite cup in between the planning, preparation and
packing family’s breakfast and lunch while being on my feet the whole time. Most
of the days, the cup is misplaced and forgotten. Sometimes, the now 'cold' coffee ends up dumped in the
sink or nuked in the microwave resulting in loss of its original taste, flavor and enjoy-ability.
Her wise words taught me a very valuable lesson. How much we
miss enjoying smaller things in life! I am reminded to stop my hectic pace and
enjoy a child’s smile, pet’s folly, colleague’s friendly gesture, morning dew,
butterfly’s wings, fading rainbow, or just a simple cup of coffee.
